MPAC's 25th annual Media Awards honoree, "A Girl in the River," is a 2016 Oscar-winning documentary that tackles honor killings in Pakistan, moving the Pakistani Prime Minister to pledge stricter laws to punish offenders after watching it himself. Every year, more than 1,000 girls and women die from honor killings in Pakistan, especially in rural areas. Told from the point-of-view of Saba, an 18-year-old survivor, this 2016 Oscar-winning documentary by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy tackles misinterpretations of Islam to justify such a crime and challenges the lack of laws punishing its perpetrators. The Pakistani Prime Minister pledged stricter laws to end honor killings after watching the film. “A Girl in the River” is a testimony of the power of storytelling to change the status quo.

MPAC's 25th annual Media Awards honoree, George Takei, is a tireless advocate for racial equality and civil rights. Actor, director, author and activist, George Takei has been a consistent voice speaking out against anti-Muslim rhetoric. A dedicated human rights advocate, Takei is an important voice warning us that today’s political rhetoric about American Muslims is reminiscent of the rhetoric that led to one of the darker stages of our history -- the outright internment of Japanese Americans.

Update 6/8/18: Our hearts and condolences are with #AnthonyBourdain’s family, friends, and colleagues. He will be remembered for opening our palettes, minds, and hearts through food, dialogue, and compassion in our shared humanity. One such example was his Parts Unknown episode addressing the Israeli-Palestinian divide for which we recognized Anthony in 2014 as a “voice of courage and conscience.” He humbly considered his work to be of “very little courage” and an “ordinary amount of conscience.” Yet, his life and work reflect the exact opposite. Tony, you will be missed. ---------- Like us on Facebook http://on.fb.me/1krQyN3 Follow us on Twitter & Instagram @mpac_national Media Coverage of the 2014 Media Awards: "The Nation" Magazine http://bit.ly/1mbw52E Haaretz http://bit.ly/1ot1E8U Daily Kos http://bit.ly/1kcmfhs
